DRB-HICOM and VW pact – 3 new models to be rolled out from Pekan

In doing so, it will strengthen the identity of Pekan and its position as a regional automotive hub. According to the prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, the rolling out of the 3 new CKD (Complete Knock Down) models from the Pekan manufacturing plant would happen by the end of next year’s first quarter. He said that the collaboration was made possible after his recent trip overseas where he met with the top officials of Volkswagen recently.

He added that having monitored the developments of DRB-HICOM for a while and what they can offer, he took the opportunity during his recent vacation to meet with the top guys at VW and inquired if they are still interested in forging the joint-venture with the automotive conglomerate. He added that it was when he was told by the VW party that they were actually waiting for his (Najib) green light to sign the agreement that he then pressed forward for this to happen.

As for the request by VW for incentives to enable them to use the Pekan plant as their Asean regional export base, Najib added that the government will study the request and would approve if appropriate. He is also confident that the collaboration would surely help to boost the development plan of the ECER (East Coast Economic Region).
