A1 TEAM MALAYSIA CAR TAKES CENTRE STAGE AT PROTON OPENING
The A1 Team Malaysia car, emblazoned with the branding of team partner, Proton, took pride of place at the opening of the Proton Cars (UK) new head office and PDI facility in Avonmouth, Bristol on Monday 21 July 2008.
The event was attended by Proton’s Malaysian Board of Directors, Malaysian media, UK dealers and key suppliers, as well A1 Team Malaysia Chief Executive, Jack Cunningham, and one of the team’s drivers, Fairuz Fauzy.
The purpose of the event was to officially open the new PDI centre and to demonstrate Proton’s commitment to providing a more efficient service for both customers and dealers. The new facility, which includes a full technical workshop and paint shop, enables Proton to prepare and store vehicles under cover, ready for next-day despatch as well as offering retail-prepared used cars to the highest standard.
In addition to a full tour of the facility, guests were treated to a close up look at the current A1 Team Malaysia race car.
Jack Cunningham said of the Malaysian team’s participation in the official opening, “We are very proud to have been invited to display the A1 Team Malaysia race car on this special occasion, marking the opening of the new Proton (UK) headquarters. We value the support that Proton gives to our team and we were delighted to attend today’s event. We’re looking forward to the start of the new season of A1GP racing in September and to promoting the Proton brand across the globe as we compete in this international Series.”
The A1GP World Cup of Motorsport returns for its fourth season of racing in September, with the first race weekend taking place in Mugello, Italy. With an all-new A1GP Powered by Ferrari car, new venues and new teams, the scene is set for the new era of A1GP and plenty more exciting race events.
DESIGN YOUR WAY TO AN OVERSEAS TRIP WITH A1 TEAM MALAYSIA
A1 Team Malaysia is giving fans the opportunity to design the helmets worn by the team mechanics for the new season of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport in a great new competition. Budding designers just need to become a member of the team’s Fanzone to enter.
The winner will not only have their design on show during all pit stops at all of the 11 race events on the A1GP calendar, but they will also win a once in a life time trip to the UK in May 2009 to watch the final round of the season.
A1 Team Malaysia fans need to show their creativity and design a helmet which will incorporate team colours and national pride. Along the A1GP pit lane only a handful of teams have designs on their mechanic’s helmets and A1 Team Malaysia want to stand out from the crowd. The team would like the designs to be as creative and original as possible.
The contest is already up and running in the A1 Team Malaysia Fanzone and to be able to submit a design the entrants need to become a member – but that is free of charge. The A1 Team Malaysia Fanzone offers members many exclusive competitions and special offers and offers access to many new and exciting features getting fans closer to the action of the nation’s favourite A1GP Team with weekly updates, photos and interviews with the drivers.
Michael Webb, Chief Mechanic for A1 Team Malaysia says, “We think this is a fantastic opportunity for our passionate A1 Team Malaysia fans. Whoever wins will see their final design on TV as the mechanics who do the tyre changes during the races run out into the pit lane. Not only that, but the winner will be able to see their final design in action at the final race weekend of the season in the UK, which they will attend as a guest of the team. This is a good reason for the fans to design a bright, bold and colourful helmet. The competition should really capture our fan’s imaginations and people of all ages can get involved and have a go at creating their own design, bringing them closer to the team.”
Only one winner will be picked. In addition to attending the final race of the season in the UK, the winner will also be rewarded with an identical helmet to the one that will be worn by the race mechanics suitably sized to fit, as well as autographed by the team. There will be 3 consolation prize winners who will be guests of the team at the A1GP Sepang event in November. The contest will end on 31 July 2008 so fans need to send in their entries as soon as possible to secure their chance to have their design on the Malaysian team helmets.
A1 TEAM MALAYSIA PROVES THE POWER OF TEAM WORK
In a recent A1GP performance ranking analysis A1 Team Malaysia were placed eighth fastest team for pit stops out of the 22 nations competing in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport. This excellent result underlines the strong teamwork that Malaysia has built up over the past three seasons of competition.
A1GP reviewed the performance of every pitstop in each of the Feature races this season and using comprehensive statistical analysis ranked each team. Malaysia’s quickest pit stop came in Shanghai, with the second fastest tyre change of all the nations, and this followed the team’s third fastest stop at the previous round in Mexico. With the average stop taken from each round, the team was ranked eighth, with Australia taking the top honours.
A1 Team Malaysia has worked hard to perfect its pit stop procedures and timing, and these efforts have proved successful this season. Julian Randles, Team Manager, says, “The pit stops can make the difference between a points finish and being an also-ran. This ranking system shows just how important a good pit stop is to the overall results.
“Our crew practice their techniques to improve their speed, as well as keeping themselves fit, and both of these are essential to perform at this level. The pit stop analysis also demonstrates just how important teamwork is in A1GP. There may only be one driver behind the wheel of our car, but it takes a crew of ten to race competitively.”
Jack Cunningham, Chief Executive, A1 Team Malaysia sums up the Malaysian success, “We always have only one goal and that is to win, whether it is passing the chequered flag first or changing the wheels in a pit stop with the quickest time.
Weve done extremely well to be eighth in this poll and at this point we’re pleased with our performance. However it also shows that there is room for improvement. During the off season we review all the critical performance elements of racing in A1GP and pit stops is one of these. We’re aiming to take another step forward in this area in the coming season.
“Teamwork and the expertise of our pit crew are vital to success and I think this analysis shows we have a great group of people with the necessary qualities and capabilities for success in A1GP.”
The A1GP Series will return to the race track for the fourth season of competition later this year, with a new car at a new venue, Mugello in Italy. The first round takes place from 19-21 September.
