No matter what anyone tells you, if you love cars, there is no way you won’t love the Toyota Supra. Remember the days when this muscle car would rev the city roads and how it became such an icon because of movies like Fast and Furious?
Signature sports car
The super-coupe car has surely lasted its time and the 3.0 turbocharged engine is still a joy to look at to the present day. When you have a car as iconic as this, it is difficult to replace. At some point, analysts believed that the Toyota Supra (1990s) was the best that any car in that segment could be and that it would surely be irreplaceable. That said, there has not been many that could live up to the performance and the persona of that Toyota Supra. Until now.
Enter the new Supra
Perhaps it is in the name of the car but in 2020, the coupe market has performed miserably for most brands, except the Toyota GR Supra. According to reports, the market dropped by more than one-third where Porsche 718 Cayman’s sales dropped by about 10% while Audi TT dropped by about 35%. The worst would be from the much-anticipated Alpine where its A110 fell to about 70% in 2020. The Supra meanwhile had an improvement when its sales improved by nearly 10%.
So, is it that good?
There is no mistake about it and the coupe market is one which is expensive and difficult to maintain. Brought in by UMW Toyota Motor, the official distributor of Toyota cars in Malaysia, the 2021 GR Supra is sold here for around RM600,000. That puts it way above many other cars in this category. In 2020, the Malaysian government offered a sales tax rebate and it is still close to the 600k mark (RM590,000 to be almost precise).
Packed with a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine paired with a 6-speed gearbox, you get to 100km/h within 4.1 seconds. And this is just the entry-level model. From the looks of it, the new Supra definitely looks smaller than its predecessors and hence ‘less furious’. One thing for sure, it is still a looker and will make heads turn but if you are one who likes muscles with looks, the previous icon is still doing what it does best.
