Dutch petrol giant Shell took inspiration from the achievement and outlined 10 tips where they tested in their campaign, the One Litre Challenge. Motorists who joined this campaign had to follow the tips and see how far they could go with 1 litre of petrol. The fuel used was of course, Shell’s own FuelSave Unleaded 95 which they claimed to be very economical and in their own words, ‘Saves up to 1 litre for every full tank’.
Jason Lai from Johor won RM50,000 at the challenge and will be Malaysia’s represenatative at the Asia Smartest Driver challenge where he will be partnering Josephine Lee from Sarawak to compete against other drivers from Asian countries for the top prize and the title of Asia’s Smartest FuelSaver.
Here then are the saving tips as outlined by Shell. First of all, you must be aware of your driving by practicing good driving habits and using the right fuel. As with a lot of Malaysian drivers, be steady and don’t practice aggressive driving because it burns up more than one third of fuel. Whenever possible, engage higher gears. It burns less fuel when you drive at a slower fuel in higher gears. It burns more fuel when you are constantly engaged in low gears.
Now this will dispel many myths. Saving air-conditioning by opening up the windows will use more fuel because it slows down the car which means you will need to accelerate more.
And yes, there is a reason for the cruise control. If you are one of those who does not use the function much, start using them because it keeps the vehicle in a constant speed. Whenever possible, turn off the car engine when not in use.
One of our Malaysian driver’s favourite, over-revving the car. Stop it and try not to cross the ‘redline’. Whenever possible, try not to drive in high speeds. Two conditions to try and minimize driving on are rush hours and hilly roads, where it requires a lot of dropping gear to low speeds.
