Hybrid models in huge demand in Malaysia after govt incentives

Ismet Suki, the president of UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd said that since the incentives were announced by the government for hybrid vehicles, the demand for vehicles under that segment has increased. The prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had announced last year during the Budget 2011 speech that hybrid models will continue to enjoy full exemptions on excise duty until the end of this year.

Ismet said that with the rising demand, the company now has a good problem which is in coming out with the supply as they have big orders. He also said that they are also looking to see if there is a possibility of the government extending the incentives for hybrid models below the 2,000 cc capacity.

Meanwhile, Rohime Shafie, the president and chief operating officer of Honda said that the company too has had a big increase in orders of hybrid cars under their stable. To date, they have already received 1,300 bookings and they expect to move to 4,000 units by the end of this year. In 2010, Honda only sold 120 hybrid models.
