The 4 seater, 4 door car is developed based on the platform that the Kia Forte was built on. It comes with a 1.5 liter direct-injection 4 cylinder engine mated with CVT (continuously variable transmission) gearbox. This would get you up with 153 horsepower that is assisted through its 78kW electric motor. The front wheels are powered up through either the petrol engine, the electric motor or both. According to Kia, the lithium-polymer batter pack can get up to 50miles when it is activated to run independently.
One very significant element of the Ray is its hexagonal solar cells which can be clearly seen at the glass roof panel which will channel energy o power up its climate control system and extra lighting. According to Kia, the Ray combines engineering with style in this concept where it is not just an eco-friendly car but exudes style and performance as well where it is 4,400mm in length, 1,850mm wide and 1,360mm tall.
Inside the car, you would love the drive-by-wire steering which pretty much is a joystick styled driving system, touch screen controls, as well as its nicely looking seats. Apparently, the fuel economy of this car is very impressive, getting you up to 202 miles per gallon and a possible range of 746 miles. Exteriorly, the concept vehicle is said to follow an aircraft-inspired design with lightweight materials used for its body.
This cool-car concept also comes with motion-detector cameras used in place of side-view and door handles which is pretty cool and seriously revolutionary. With most brands moving into the hybrid and eco-friendly bandwagon, it is no surprise that Kia, with its whole new branding image and new designs would go this far with the Ray.
