The second national car maker of Malaysia, Perodua (Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd) has announced they will be launching the Exclusive Edition of their widely popular Multi-purpose Vehicle (MPV) Perodua Alza. The Exclusive Edition is effectively the facelift version of the Alza Advanced Version where the company had scheduled to roll out sometime in the mid-year months.
Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh, the Managing Director of Perodua sadi this at the visit of the former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who visited the company last week. He said that the company has yet to finalize the pricing of the limited edition model as well as what additional features to be included and the booking dates too. For now, the only detail that is available is that there will only be 500 units of the Exclusive Edition while other details will follow suit later.
He also said that as of December 2010, Perodua has maintained its position as the number one company in terms of vehicle sales in Malaysia. He reported that Perodua held the top spot where it had 31.2% of market share, selling 188,600 units while back in 1994, when it first started, they were selling only 8,800 units which was only 4.4% of market share. It has been about one decade since Dr Mahathir last visited the plant and headquarters.
The company presented a unit of the MPV with the registration number 2020 to Dr Mahathir to commemorate his Vision 2020 when he was the prime minister of Malaysia. On top of that, for the 500 limited edition units, the company will also be donating RM1,000 for every unit sold tot he Perdana Leadership Foundation of which Dr Mahathir is the Honorary President. This means that if all 500 units are sold, which is most likely, the Foundation would receive RM500,000 in donations.
