When he joined Ferrari, many called it a ‘match made in heaven’ where the top racer was set to drive for the top car manufacturer. But something was badly amiss. Schumacher is German while Ferrari is Italian. Somehow they looked perfectly suited for each other. And the results spoke for themselves where Schumi ended his career on a high, winning more championships than anyone ever did, more than Senna, Williams, Stewart and the rest of the pack. In fact, into his third season, many started to wonder where will he stop. And he did not until he had enough.
That was then. Today he has gone back to his roots. He now drive for a German car maker in an all German line up. He has returned with Mercedes Formula 1 team alongside fellow German Nico Rosberg. This, to many would seemed more the perfect match. How he fare in this team remains to be seen. His closest rival? That would be the All-English team of McLaren which includes Lewis Hamilton, the previous World Champion and the current one, Jenson Button. Only the engine is German here. It does not get better than this.
So, is it going to be Schumi-Button (legend versus World Champion) or Schumi-Hamilton (master versus apprentice)? Many would be asking. Whichever way one sees it, you cannot discount the role played by Ferrari in all this. While they might no longer have the services of Kimi Raikkonen, they still have a more reliable engine in most season (apart from last). So it is definitely tighter this coming season.
It gets more exciting in fact and Schumi’s comeback is set to spark more interest in the fast-deteriorating sport which was more known for its scandals in the past few seasons than the quality of races around the tracks. Perhaps next season is where the focus would be back in the cars and the drivers and the world watches as Schumacher re-takes his spot in the number 1 car, which would be given to Mercedes GP, previously driven by Jenson Button when it was still known as Brawn GP. Gentlemen, start your engines.
