The SsangYong Motor Company is the owner of the SsangYong brand of vehicles. It is one of the major South Korean players in the global automotive industry which was founded in 1954. SsangYong is involved mainly in the production of automobiles and commercial vehicles which was recently acquired by Indian automotive group Mahindra & Mahindra Limited.
It is actually the fourth largest South Korean-based automotive maker but faced with bankruptcy in 2011 before it was acquired by Mahindra &U Mahindra. It was originally 2 different companies before it merged in 1963. In 1991, SsangYong collaborated with Daimler-Benz in a technology partnership initiative that saw the SUV SsangYong Musso produced using the Mercedes-Benz platform.
The Musso would then be marketed by Benz and then taken over by SsangYong later. SsangYong would continue to expand into later models like the Korando and the Rexton. SsangYong has quite an impressive lineup of models that include its Korando, Actyon and Rexton SUVs while it produces vans like the Rodius and Stavic as well. The Chairman W is currently the luxury car marketed under the SsangYong brand while it has a list of trucks and other commercial vehicles too.
Unlike its other South Korean counterparts like Hyundai and Kia, SsangYong is not as popular and demanded in the markets but it does has its own following. In Malaysia, SsangYong markets its Stavic, Actyon Sports and Rexton W vehicles through its comprehensive network of sales and service centers located in several states around the country.
