The 4WD model is a fully CBU (Completely Built Unit) model imported from our northern neighbours, Thailand while the lower range variant, the 2.5L model is assembled here locally. This new variant gets you the 3.0 liter D-4D engine which is the 1KD-FTV one that comes with commonrail injection and intercooler with VNT. This is different from the one you get from the 2.5 model which comes only with the VNT (Variable Nozzle Unit) turbo system which gets you about 100 horses and 260 Nm. However, this new pick up now gets you up to 160 horses and 343Nm of torque.
Inside the car, there are some cool looking stuff here where you might like the Optitron meter panel and a multi-information display system which provides you with information like the compass direction, all regular trip computer information and the ambient temperature. Entertainment is channeled through its Double Din audio system which provides USB and AUX connectivity. The MP3 compatible player cracks out the volume through the 6 speakers fitted around the cabin.
According to Kuah Kock Heng, the president of UMW, they are set to enhance their marker share of the double cab segment which they lead with 44%. The current model (2.5L) which started selling here in 2005 has since made itself into more than 69,000 owners and to date, they have already received more than 1,000 bookings for the new variant. After that, they are targeting to roll out 600 units of this model every month. The new model is already on show at their dealers’ network around the country since October 8 and Kuah added that with the Hilux being the preferred choice among Malaysians, the new variant will surely give them more reasons to own one.
