Lamborghini

Lamborghini is one brand which has a long and illustrious history. Founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini in 1963, it is often perceived to be a supercar class of its own with not many brands coming close to its reputation and stature. In fact, enthusiasts have often placed Lamborghini cars above the likes of Ferrari and Porsche in terms of class and design.

The Supercar with a super-name

This Italian supercar was founded in Sant’Agata Bolognese as Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini S.p.A before it was bought over by Audi AG in 1998. As an exclusive brand in the automotive industry, Lamborghini has been producing some of the fastest and most luxurious cars in this segment. In 2012, production output of Lamborghini cars was at 2,197 units.

It seems that Lamborghini is very focused in the production of superfast engines where it is involved in the production of V12 engines used in powerboat racing. The Lamborghini Murcielago is one of the most renowned names in the automotive segment while other names like Diablo and Gallardo are highly popular as well.

Background

When the company was formed, the idea was to compete with the supercar brands. In 1963, the Miura sports coupe was launched with was greeted with a lot of fanfare. The rea mid-engine and rear-wheel drive was to become a trademark and icon for the brand for decades to come. However, around the 1970s, sales started to drop due to the economic downturn then.

Ownership changes

After 1973, the company would change hands 3 times that saw it even bankrupting. An American company bought over Lamborghini before Mycom Setdco from Malaysia and Indonesia’s V’Power Corporation took over in 1994 and subsequently sold to Volkswagen in 1998.

New products and model lines were introduced to the brand’s portfolio and brought to the market and saw an increased productivity for the brand Lamborghini. In the late 2000s, during the worldwide financial crisis and the subsequent economic crisis, Lamborghini’s sales saw a drop of nearly 50 percent.
